Workshop on OSPE and OSCE
About
OSPE and OSCE are two different assessment methods commonly used in healthcare and medical education to evaluate students' clinical skills and competence. They provide a standardised and objective way to assess clinical competence in healthcare education. They help ensure that healthcare professionals are adequately prepared for real-world clinical practice and provide valuable feedback for further development. As part of quality enhancement in assessment, the Academy proposes implementing OSPE/OSCE as an assessment tool for all the programmes offered. In this regard, UCHPE is conducting a one-day workshop on “OSPE and OSCE” for its successful implementation. A workshop on OSPE and OSCE was conducted by the University Centre for Health Professions Education, SDUAHER, on 7 November 2023. The highlights of the event are as follows. Dr. T N Suresh highlighted the importance of formative and summative evaluation methods, emphasising fairness, reliability, and relevance in assessments. Dr. Rashmi discussed structured assessments like practical exams and OSCEs, stressing their role in identifying strengths and areas for improvement. Dr. Geetha and Dr. Anitha focused on OSPE, guiding attendees in structuring assessments and assessing various skills. Dr. Sudha Reddy emphasised blueprints' pivotal role in OSPE and OSCE, prioritising structured essay questions. Post-lunch, participants engaged in hands-on group activities, preparing assigned tasks and critiquing each other's stations. Constructive feedback focused on question and checklist formulation, fostering collaborative learning and skill development in assessment design. The iterative process showcased a dynamic exchange of ideas, enhancing the overall learning experience for educators.
